SAINT PATRICK STUDENT SERVICES

LEARNING RESOURCES

As a private school, St. Patrick High School realizes the need for a program that addresses both students with disabilities and those who need more intensive support academically or behaviorally. The Learning Resource Department manages and provides services that support student learning and teaching, focusing on executive functioning skills, targeted learning strategies in English and Math, differentiated instructional materials, curriculum development, and instructional support to our teachers. As part of this program, we have implemented the Every Shamrock Succeeds Program, which is dedicated to helping our students who struggle academically and behaviorally. Our two teachers hold endorsements as Learning Behavior Specialists who specialize in working with students with special needs/disabilities and those who need greater support in the classroom. Our goal is to help our students become independent learners by giving them the skills to succeed inside and outside of the classroom as they progress through the curriculum at St. Patrick High School. The department also manages and implements 504 plans and Individual Education Plans (IEP) alongside our dedicated classroom teachers.

504 PLAN MANAGEMENT

A 504 plan is a plan that is developed to help students who has a disability that falls under the law (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973) A 504 Plan, that outlines the accommodations and support services to students with disabilities in grades K-12. These 504 plans are specifically developed for students who do not need specialized instruction or an IEP, but struggle due to a diagnosed mental or physical disability that limits one or more major life activities, such as their ability to learn in a general education classroom. All 504 plans are managed by the Learning Resources Department and implemented in conjunction with our teachers to ensure that our students with 504 plans succeed in the classroom. St. Patrick High School works alongside Chicago Public Schools to identify and evaluate any student who might be eligible for a 504 plan. For all 504 plan-related questions, contact Director of Learning Resources, Kim Noschese.

INDIVIDUAL EDUCATION PLAN (IEP) MANAGEMENT
An IEP is created for students with disabilities who require specialized instruction and support to access and succeed in their education. To qualify for an IEP, a student must have a disability that falls within one of the following 14 categories outlined by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) :
  1. Autism
  2. Deaf-blindness
  3. Deafness
  4. Developmental delay (age 3- 9)
  5. Emotional disturbance
  6. Hearing impairment
  7. Intellectual disability
  8. Multiple disabilities
  9. Orthopedic impairment
  10. Other health impairment
  11. Specific learning disability
  12. Speech or language impairment
  13. Traumatic brain injury
  14. Visual impairment
Progress is measured through the Learning Resources Department and IEPs are reviewed periodically and revised as necessary per Federal and State mandates. As a private school, we work alongside Chicago Public Schools and the Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services (ODLSS) to ensure that our students are receiving the proper accommodations and modifications. For all IEP-related questions, contact Director of Learning Resources, Kim Noschese.
ACADEMIC & BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS

As educators, we realize that our practices and philosophies impact our students most when they are provided targeted support that addresses academics, behavior, and social-emotional health, all of which can be interwoven. St. Patrick High School and Every Shamrock Succeeds (ESS) Resource Program utilizes multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), a tiered infrastructure that uses data to help us meet each student’s needs and provide the appropriate interventions. It allows us to be organized and thoughtful about our resources and how they can be implemented increasingly in your son’s classroom settings. These interventions are for all students enrolled at St. Patrick High School and begin in their classrooms, allowing fewer students who need additional needs or support academically or behaviorally. By having this system in place at St. Patrick High School and integrating it into the ESS Resource Program, we are improving student outcomes and giving them lifelong skills to succeed in and outside the classroom.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR TEACHERS

The Learning Resource Department and the Every Shamrock Succeeds (ESS) program work alongside teachers to create an inclusive education environment that provides a comprehensive curriculum that meets all our students’ needs. As a team, we work collaboratively to modify lessons and curriculum, implement IEPs and 504s, and provide professional development in behavior management, resource sharing, mentoring, and progress monitoring. By offering these accommodations to our teachers, we help them feel confident and supported when working with learners who struggle academically or behaviorally.

EVERY SHAMROCK SUCCEEDS (ESS) BLOCK

ESS provides a means for educators and parents to collaborate and problem-solve individual students’ needs. It consists of a team of individuals who meet to discuss students’ needs, review assessment results, and develop plans to assist students in improving academically, emotionally, or behaviorally.  Students’ needs may include needs related to reading, written language, mathematics, or other subject areas. Some students’ needs are related to their emotional well-being or behavior. The overall goal of ESS is to support students in need by intervening early, communicating often, and collaborating as a team to ensure your son’s success.

SHAMROCK POWER HOUR (BEFORE SCHOOL)

Shamrock Power Hour is hosted every Wednesday on a late start schedule. From 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., students can receive help with their classroom or homework. It provides students additional instruction time and individualized attention from Resource and classroom teachers. We focus on skill development that is essential for their academic success and can benefit struggling students looking to improve their grades and help motivate and engage them in their learning. Shamrock Power Hour is a positive and motivating environment that can boost a struggling student’s confidence and enthusiasm for academics while providing a structured routine and space. The Resource Teachers track students’ academic progress and work with their classroom teachers to identify areas of improvement and adjust support accordingly.
