Michael J. Mackey ’84

A highly accomplished insurance executive with more than 23 years of experience, Michael Mackey applies his expertise as a Senior Managing Director and member of the Insurance Management Committee of Mesirow Financial in Chicago. In this role, Michael helps oversee the company’s insurance brokerage and risk management operations. In addition, he manages a large team of professionals responsible for coordinating and maintaining insurance programs for public entity, corporate, and non- profit clients. Drawing on his extensive background in managing the insurance needs of medium-sized to large-sized businesses, Michael provides corporate clients with targeted risk management solutions in areas such as property and casualty, mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, executive liability, employee benefits, and total cost of risk.

Michael is an ‘84 alumnus of Saint Patrick High School. After obtaining a Bachelor of Business Degree in Finance from Loyola University Business School, he began is insurance career as an Account Manager at Aon Reinsurance Agency, handling underwriting analysis and placement in the reinsurance assumed market.  Michael was a managing director for a major, regional insurance brokerage firm based in Chicago prior to joining Mesirow Financial Insurance Services, Inc. In addition to his management of the public sector team, he provides expertise to his division. In his role on the Insurance Management Committee, Michael collaborates with his peers to provide strategic direction and innovative solutions to the company’s insurance division.

In addition, he is a previous Governmental Affairs Chairman for the Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois and a past Trustee for the State University retirement System (SURS) for 7 years. He also previously served as a board member for both the Sun-Times Media Holdings and the International Visitors Center of Chicago. Michael is a member of the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association (GNMAA) and is a current Director for the Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars Foundation (WGA ESF). He proudly served the Illinois Army National Guard as a military reservist for 6 years. Michael is married to Sharyl Mackey and together they are raising three young boys in their Chicago residence.
