Shamrocks Weekly Sports Round-up

Bowling
The St. Patrick High School bowling team competed at the state tournament last weekend. Junior Jim Ulczak led the Shamrocks, finishing 58 with an average of 200 points per game during the championship round held on Saturday. Ulczak was the only Shamrock to make it to the championship. His highest scoring round was his opening game on Friday where he scored a 266. Ulczak’s pin average for this season was over 200. He was only the second St. Pat’s bowler to ever make the championship round. Senior Nate Gentile capped off his season with a 190 average during Friday’s preliminaries.
Wrestling
The Shamrock wrestling team finished third at the East Suburban Catholic Conference Championships last Friday. The Shamrocks’ 154 points was five points shy of second place Marist. Marian Catholic won the meet with 184 points. Junior Alex Ortiz won his second straight conference title after defeating opponents from St. Joseph, Joliet Catholic and Carmel. The 160-pound junior improved his season record to 35-6. Eight individuals earned All-Conference honors including 4 champions. Senior Joe Rau also won a second straight conference title. Senior Anthony Sciaccotta and sophomore Charlie Doyle picked up their first varsity titles. Sciaccotta avenged an earlier season loss to Marist’s Dominic Olivieri by pulling off a 5-0 overtime victory in the finals. Senior Matt Ortega and junior Anthony Tripoli finished second, and junior Jack Bailey and sophomore Carlos Martinez finished third.
The Shamrocks will wrestle at the IHSA Class 3A Mather Regional this Saturday.
Basketball
Junior Julian Reed scored three three-pointers in the Shamrock’s (13-5 overall, 7-2 ESCC) 67-29 victory over the Carmel Catholic Corsairs on Friday. Senior Bryant Smith scored 15 points and senior Michael Frey scored 10 points. On Saturday the Shamrocks lost 42-41 to Joliet Catholic. Sophomore Kortney Darby stepped up to the line making four of six free throws helping him to a team high ten points. Smith and fellow senior Curtis Gilmore scored nine and eight points, respectively.
The Shamrocks are inviting fans to wear pink in honor of their breast cancer awareness “Think Pink” event tomorrow. Exclusive pink T-shirts will be available for purchase while supplies last. Breast cancer survivors will receive free admission. The Shamrocks will be hosting former St. Pat’s coach Gene Heidkamp and the Benet Academy Redwings. On Saturday they will host St. Ignatius.
