Shamrocks go 2-1 in Max Kurland Tournament

The Saint Patrick Shamrocks opened the 2007-2008 season by winning two of three games in their annual Max Kurland Thanksgiving Tournament. The Shamrocks soundly defeated Amundsen in their season opener, but fell to North Chicago before rebounding to beat Fenwick on Saturday night. Jerome Robinson, Tim Traversa, and David Campbell were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Shamrocks. Robinson averaged over 10 points and seven rebounds per game, and he shot 79% (11 of 14) from the floor in the tournament. Traversa averaged nine points, six rebounds and fours assists per game. Campbell was the Shamrocks leading scorer, averaging over 11 points per game.
In the opener, the Shamrocks crushed Amundsen 82-51 with an efficient offensive attack. Saint Patrick shot 61% from the field, and fifteen different Shamrocks scored in the game. Robinson paced the Shamrocks with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tim Traversa added 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. David Campbell scored nine points and handed out four assists, and Curtis Gilmore came off the bench to score eight points and grab five rebounds.
On Friday night Saint Patrick battled a strong North Chicago team. The Warhawks got out to an early lead, but the Shamrocks fought back, cutting the lead to only three points at 32-29 at the half. In the second half, the Shamrocks struggled at the offensive end, shooting only 18% (4-22) from the floor. Meanwhile, the Warhawks shot 55% from the field and made nine of 13 free throws in the second half to finish off a 53-39 victory. Campbell led all scorers with 16 points, and Traversa contributed eight points and six rebounds.
Saturday night, the Shamrocks faced the Friars of Fenwick. With a large crowd on hand, the Shamrocks defense put the clamps on the Friars, holding them to nine first-half points on three of 18 shooting. Saint Patrick pulled away in the second half en route to a 47-26 victory. Robinson didn’t miss a shot, connecting on five field goals and six free throws for a game-high 16 points, and he pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Traversa tallied six points, six assists and five rebounds, and Campbell added nine points for the Shamrocks.
The Shamrocks begin East Suburban Catholic Conference play this weekend, as they host the Chargers of Saint Joseph on Friday, November 30. Next Tuesday night Saint Patrick will participate in a North versus South showdown as the Shamrocks travel to Brother Rice. |
