Soccer Team Wins Second Consecutive Regional Title
October 22, 2007

The Saint Patrick soccer team captured their second consecutive Illinois High School Association Regional Championship, the first two in school history, when they defeated Schurz in the championship game of the Chicago (Saint Patrick) Regional by a score of 1-0 on penalty kicks on October 19.

The Shamrocks began regional play with a 2-0 win over Lincoln Park.  That win earned the Shamrocks a berth in the Regional Championship Game against Schurz.  Goalkeeper Chris Williams recorded the shutout for the Shamrocks, while Jon Ortiz and Tommy Arevalo scored goals.

In the title game, the Shamrocks and the Bulldogs squared off in what would become an epic battle.  A strong cross wind was a big factor in the game, wreaking havoc with any ball kicked in the air.  The Shamrocks dominated play early, nearly scoring when they knocked a shot off the underside of the crossbar.  Their confidence bolstered by surviving the Shamrock onslaught, the Bulldogs went on the offensive.  Williams was forced to make several saves to keep Saint Patrick in the game.

As the game wore on, fatigue, darkness and a rapidly falling temperature became factors.  The teams fought each other through 80 minutes of regulation play and four ten-minute sudden death overtime periods, a total of 120 minutes, to a scoreless tie, sending the match to penalty kicks.

Each team selected five players to attempt penalty kicks.  Williams forced one Bulldog into a mistake, and his kick went off the crossbar for the only miss of the shootout.  Meanwhile, Josh Delvalle, Ortiz, Andrew Ciepiela, Dave Carta and Jaime Aza all converted their attempts, with Aza’s goal clinching the game and setting off a wild celebration on the darkened field.  Saint Patrick is now a perfect 3-0 in games decided by penalty kicks.

The Shamrocks face Juarez on Tuesday afternoon at 3:45pm in the Chicago (Saint Ignatius) Sectional semi-final.  The winner of that game will face the winner of the Lane Tech versus Saint Ignatius match for the Sectional Title.  Saint Patrick will be attempting to win the first IHSA Sectional Championship in the school’s history.
