Shamrocks Close Week with three straight wins
April 21, 2008

The Saint Patrick baseball team is bounced back from a rough start to the week with three straight victories over Holy Trinity, St. Benedict and Marian Catholic.

The Shamrocks opened the week, and conference play, by dropping both ends of a twi-night doubleheader at Marist by identical 13-3 scores.

The Shamrocks bounced back with an 8-1 win over Holy Trinity he next afternoon. Sophomore Eric Jenkins pitched a complete game, allowing only five hits, while striking out eight to pick up the win. D.J. Stern and Mike Day provided the offense. Stern had two hits, and Day hit a homerun and drove in three runs.

On Thursday, the Shamrocks thrashed St. Benedict 17-0. Ryan Moskal, Gus Pasquale and Ed Harrington combined on the shutout, while Mike Draniczarek and Ryan O’Hayer keyed the offense. Draniczarek finished the day with two hits, two runs and three runs batted in, while O’Hayer added a pair of doubles and knocked in three runs.

On Saturday morning the Shamrocks headed South to take on Marian Catholic in a conference doubleheader. Saint Patrick took the first game by a score of 9-5. Brian Konopka pitched five innings, and Ryan Moskal finished the game. Matt Hansen, Eddie Ortiz and Lenny Cunzalo each had two hits and drove in a run.

The second game was suspended due to rain with no score in the bottom of the second inning. That game will be completed at a later date.

Head Coach Dan Eberle is encouraged by his team’s progress; “This is the first time all year that we were able to get a full week of baseball in. We seem to be hitting our stride. I saw improvement with each game we played this week.”

The Shamrocks continue East Suburban Catholic Conference play with a home-and-home series against Notre Dame and a doubleheader against Joliet Catholic this Saturday.
