January 28, 2008
The Saint Patrick Shamrocks ran their record to 14-5 with a pair of road victories at Joliet Catholic and Elk Grove last weekend. The Shamrocks have now won four straight games and six of their last seven. They are alone in first place in the East Suburban Catholic Conference, with a record of 7-1, one-half game ahead of the Chargers of Saint Joseph.
Last Friday the Shamrocks traveled to Joliet to take on the Hilltoppers of Joliet Catholic Academy. The Shamrocks rolled to a 67-46 victory. Tim Traversa and Jerome Robinson dominated the game from the opening tip. Traversa hit three three-pointers and Robinson scored 10 points, staking the Shamrocks to a 21-11 after one quarter. Bryant Smith took over in the second quarter, scoring 10 of the Shamrocks’ 12 points in the period as the Shamrocks took a 33-25 lead into halftime. Saint Patrick extended their lead throughout the second half, easily pulling away for the victory. Smith and Traversa each scored 18 points to lead the Shamrocks. Robinson finished with 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while David Campbell chipped in with 11 points.
The next night the Shamrocks got a monster performance from Robinson as they beat Elk Grove 61-47. Robinson scored a career-high 28 points, blocked six shots, and grabbed six rebounds. Robinson was nearly perfect from the field, making 13 of the 14 shots that he took from the floor. In the first half, Robinson was six-for-six, and the Shamrock defense held the Grenadiers to 26% shooting as Saint Patrick built a 28-17. Robinson then scored 10 of the Shamrocks 13 points in the third quarter, as they held off a Grenadier rally. The Shamrocks finished strong, cruising to victory. Traversa finished with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block, and Campbell added 13 points and four assists. Joshua Whitaker provided a spark off the bench, grabbing five rebounds and blocking a shot.
The Shamrocks return to action on Friday night, when they host the Roadrunners of Nazareth Academy.
