  Shamrock Wrestlers Sweep Quad

The Saint Patrick wrestlers had a busy weekend. On Friday night the Shamrocks swept the Saint Patrick Quadrangular, defeating St. Laurence, St. Ignatius, and Fenwick. On Saturday, they placed fifth in the Rex Lewis Tournament, hosted by Buffalo Grove High School.

In their first match of the quad, the Shamrocks drew the Vikings of St. Laurence. After losing the first match by decision, Matt Ortega got the Shamrocks on the board, pinning his opponent at 1:37 at 152 pounds. The Vikings won the next two matches for a 12-6 lead before defending state champ Joe Fagiano tied the match at 12 with a pin at 2:00 at 189 pounds. Marty LaBelle and George Vitzileos scored pins in the next two matches, but the Vikings responded with pins at both 103 pounds and 119 pounds to tie the match at 24 with four bouts remaining. Brian Ridley pinned his opponent at 125 pounds at 1:45, but a forfeit at 130 pounds knotted the match at 30. Jimmy DiNino and Joe Rau came through to seal the match for the Shamrocks. DiNino scored a pin at 135 pounds to give Saint Patrick a 36-30 advantage, and Rau won a major decision by a total of 13-3 to clinch the match.

Saint Patrick faced St. Ignatius in the second match of the quad, and this one was close as well. Ortega put the Shamrocks ahead 6-0 with a pin at 1:41 in the first match. The Wolfpack won the next two bouts by fall to take a 12-6 lead. Fagiano scored a technical fall at 3:15, LaBelle won a 7-6 decision, and Vitzileos pinned his opponent at 1:47 to give the Shamrocks a 20-12 advantage. St. Ignatius buounced back, winnin by fall at 103 pounds, and by decision at 119 pounds to re-claim the lead at 21-20. Ridley, DiNino, and Rau all won decisions to clinch the match. Ridley won 5-3 with a takedown in overtime, DiNino won 10-6, and Rau beat his opponent 7-2. The Wolfpack won a major decision in the final bout, but the Shamrocks won the match by a score of 29-25.

In their final match of the night, the Shamrocks took on the Friars of Fenwick. The Friars won the first two matches for a 9-0 lead, but pins by Fagiano (:59), LaBelle (:50), and Vitzileos (1:03), combined with a forfeit victory at 103 pounds put the Shamrocks ahead 24-9. A forfeit and a pin for the Friars made it 24-21, before Ridley scored a pin at 54 seconds. Another forfeit and a major decision at 135 pounds gave the Friars a 31-30 lead with three bouts left. Rau won an 11-7 decision to take the lead back, but Joe Romano lost the next match 6-4 on a takedown with five seconds remaining in the match. Trailing 34-33 going into the final match, Matt Ortega came through in the clutch. Ortega pinned his opponent at 3:01 to give the Shamrocks a 39-34 victory.

On Saturday the Shamrocks participated in the Rex Lewis Invitational, hosted by Buffalo Grove High School, where three Shamrocks (Fagiano, Schiewe, and LaBelle) all won individual titles. Fagiano rolled to victory at 189 pounds, beating Brandon Forshall of Buffalo Grove by a score of 11-1, and defeating Tyrand Williams of Lyons Township 13-4 in the championship match. Schiewe tore through the competition at 130 pounds, pinning Guy Pedigo of Brother Rice in 25 seconds, and defeating Carlos Gonzalez of Curie by a score of 17-1 before winning an 11-3 decision over D.J. Fairfield of Carmel for the championship. LaBelle had to work a little harder for his title, pinning John Pischak at 5:15 and hanging on for a 7-6 victory over Andy Dolce of Carmel before winning an 8-1 decision fir the title.

Ridley finished second at 125 pounds, dropping a 9-2 decision in the title match. Romano won a 6-3 decision over Kevin Anderson of Buffalo Grove to take third place. Anthony Sciaccotta and George Vitzileos both placed fourth, and Robert Peters finished fifth at 119 pounds.
