The Saint Patrick Shamrocks won one of three dual meets at the Maine South Quadrangular on Saturday, December 2. The Shamrocks defeated Evergreen Park, but lost to Montini and Maine South.
In their first match of the quad, the Shamrocks drew the fourth –ranked team in the state, the Broncos of Montini. Montini won the first five matches to build a 25-0 lead before defending state champion, Joe Fagiano, got the Shamrocks on the board. Fagiano scored a dramatic 6-4 decision at 189 pounds. Late in the match, with Fagiano nursing a 4-2 lead against Dan Grimes, Grimes took Fagiano down to tie the match at four, but Fagiano was able pull out the match with a reversal that gave him a 6-4 decision. Jon Schiewe scored the other Shamrock victory at 130 pounds, pinning Bob Grimes at 1:48. Matt Ortega, Joe Rau, and Jimmy DiNino, all lost decisions as the Broncos defeated the Shamrocks 65-9.
Saint Patrick faced the host Hawks of Maine South. Joe Romano won the first match, scoring a 16-9 decision at 145 lbs. Ortega entered the third period of his 152 lb match tied at two, but lost a close decision on a late reversal. Maine South took the next four matches, before George Vitlzileos scored a 4-3 decision at 285 lbs to make the score 19-5 in favor of the Hawks. Three consecutive Hawk pins made the score 37-5. The Shamrocks rallied to win three of the final four matches as Brian Ridley scored a 9-3 decision at 125 lbs, Schiewe pinned his opponent at 130 lbs in 21 seconds, and Rau pulled out a 4-2 decision on a third period reversal at 140 lbs.
In their final match, the Shamrocks thumped Evergreen Park 60-18. Pins by Marty LaBelle (2:44 at 215 lbs) and Anthony Sciaccotta (3:00 at 103 lbs), along with three forfeit wins gave the Shamrocks a 30-6 lead after seven matches. After the Mustangs closed the lead to 30-18, the Shamrocks finished them off with four pins and a forfeit in the last five matches. Ridley scored a pin at 3:35 at 125 lbs, Schiewe built a 12-6 lead before scoring a pin at 1:22 at 130 lbs, Rau pinned his opponent at 1:02 at 140 lbs, and Romano scored the fastest pin, finishing off his opponent at 145 lbs. in only 35 seconds.
This weekend the Shamrocks host Fenwick, Saint Laurence, and St. Ignatius for a quadrangular match on Friday, before participating in the Buffalo Grove Tournament on Saturday.
