Saint Patrick High School senior Joe Fagiano signed a National Letter of Intent to wrestle on a scholarship next season at Indiana University on November 8, 2006. Fagiano, who graduated from Union Ridge Grammar School, will join head coach Duane Goldman and the Hoosiers in Bloomington, Indiana after an outstanding career on the mat for the Shamrocks.
Fagiano won the IHSA Individual State Championship at 215 pounds by defeating Christian Brantley of Mount Carmel 3-2 on February 18 in Urbana-Champaign. Fagiano became only the second wrestler in school history to claim an IHSA Individual State Championship, joining heavyweight Mike Mroczek in 1985. Fagiano posted a record of 45-2 in the 215 pound weight class, winning the East Suburban Catholic Conference Championship, the Illinois High School Association’s Oak Park (Fenwick) Regional Championship, and the IHSA’s Franklin Park/Northlake (Leyden) Sectional Championship. He is the first Shamrock to win a medal at the IHSA State Championships since current head coach Pat Duggan placed fourth in 1990.
Fagiano joins a program that is on the way up in the Big Ten Conference. The Hoosiers posted an overall record of 11-6 last year, with five wrestlers qualifying for the NCAA National Championships.
