Michael Cermak, a junior at Saint Patrick, tied for 42nd place at the Illinois High School Association’s Boy’s Golf Championships at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington. Cermak shot a twelve-over-par score of 83 on Friday morning, and then he came back with an eight-over-par 79 on Saturday. Cermak’s two-day total of 162 left him 19 shots off the pace of Luke Guthrie of Quincy and William Cullen of University High School in Normal, who fired one under par scores of 143.
Following a lengthy delay for frost on the course, Cermak came out of the gate slowly, with five bogeys and a double-bogey leaving him seven-over-par after eight holes. A birdie on the ninth gave him a score of 42 on the front nine. Cermak parred the tenth hole, but followed with a double bogey on eleven and then three straight bogeys. A birdie at sixteen and a bogey on eighteen left Cermak at 83 for his first round, tied for 57th place.
On Saturday Cermak started with bogeys on four of the first five holes. A birdie on the seventh hole was followed by bogeys on eight and nine, giving Cermak a front-nine score of 41. Following a bogey at ten, Cermak settled down to play his best stretch of the championships with four pars and a birdie over the next five holes. Bogeys on sixteen and seventeen pushed him over par, but his 38 on the back nine was his best nine holes of the tournament, getting him below 80 for the round at 79. Cermak’s total of 162 earned him a tie for 42nd place.
