Last Friday night, the Redwings of Benet Academy upset the Saint Patrick Shamrocks by a score of 54-40. The Redwings got 24 points out of their reserves, and they played outstanding defense, limiting Saint Patrick to one field goal in the fourth quarter. The Shamrocks are now 14-4 overall, and 7-1 in conference play, good for a first place tie with Saint Joseph in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.
The teams battled back and forth in the first quarter. Benet’s Mick Doyle knocked down a pair of three-pointers to keep the Redwings in the game, and the first period ended with the game tied at 11. The Redwings built a seven-point halftime lead by outscoring the Shamrocks 16-9 in the second quarter.
The Shamrocks came out ready to fight in the third quarter, roaring back to take a 34-33 lead with 2:54 remaining in the third quarter. That was as good as it would get for Saint Patrick. Giancarlo Cecchini hit a three-pointer to end the third quarter, giving Benet a six-point lead at 40-34 heading into the final quarter. Saint Patrick struggled offensively as they tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, failing to score a field goal until the closing seconds. Jerome Robinson paced the Shamrocks with 10 points, while Sam Maniscalco and David Campbell each scored 9 points for the Shamrocks.
This weekend the Shamrocks return home for their first home games since January 13, hosting Notre Dame on Friday night and Elk Grove on Saturday night.
