The Saint Patrick basketball team ran their record to 6-0 with wins over Brother Rice and Notre Dame. Tuesday night the Shamrocks hit the road to take on the Crusaders of Brother Rice in a north versus south showdown, which the Shamrocks 55-44. On Friday night, the Shamrocks continued their dominance over Notre Dame. With a 64-37 rout at home on December 9, the Shamrocks took home their 13th win in the last 14 meetings between the traditional East Suburban Catholic Conference rivals.
At Brother Rice the Shamrocks struggled through the first half, shooting less than 30% from the field, and went into the locker room trailing 21-20 after 16 minutes. To open the third quarter, Sam Maniscalco scored eight points in a 10-2 Shamrock run that gave them a 30-23 lead with 2:48 remaining in the third quarter. Brother Rice scored seven straight points to tie the game at 30 a minute and a half later, then Saint Patrick put the game away with a 14-0 run which put them up 44-30 with four minutes remaining in the game. Mike Giller made 11 of 12 free throws in the final two minutes of the game to ice the victory. Maniscalco finished with a game-high 17 points and eight steals, while Giller added 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Against Notre Dame the Shamrocks started slow, trailing 12-10 after the first quarter, but outscored the Dons 19-6 in the second period. Mike Fahey, who scored seven points in the period, and Giller, who added six in the frame, keyed the Shamrock onslaught as they built a 29-18 halftime lead. Saint Patrick carried the momentum into the second half, Jimmy Larkin drained a pair of threes to help open a 47-26 advantage after three quarters, putting the game away. Giller and Edmond O’Callaghan, who each scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, paced the Shamrocks, while Maniscalco scored 12 points and dished out five assists.
