The Saint Patrick water polo team dominated the inaugural "Daniel J. Noble Memorial Tournament,” taking first place. The Shamrocks went a perfect 4-0 in the tournament, outscoring the opposition 51-10 over four matches. The Shamrocks are now 16-3-1 and ranked third in the state.
The Shamrocks opened the tournament by beating beat Homewood-Flossmoor by a score of 10-4. In their second match the Shamrocks thrashed Oak Park-River Forest 15-1. Loyola Academy was no match for the Shamrocks in their third match, as Saint Patrick pounded the Ramblers 14-3. In the final match of the tournament, the Shamrocks continued to roll with a 12-2 dismantling of Brother Rice.
Joe Przekota earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Despite facing two and three defenders at all times, Przekota averaged three goals and four steals per game. James Ridgeway and Patrick Szyzka joined Przekota on the All-Tournament Team. Ridgeway displayed his all-around skills, averaging six steals, two goals and four assists per game. Szyzka was a wall in the Shamrock goal, averaging 18 blocks per game. Tom Pederson, Brendan Skelton and Michael Morun all had great tournaments, and Jeff Winter provided the Shamrocks with needed balance by scoring two goals per game from the lefty position. The Shamrocks’ improving defense was the story of the tournament. The Shamrocks starters allowed an average of only two goals per game.
The annual Saint Patrick varsity water polo tournament was re-named the “Daniel J. Noble Memorial Tournament” this year in memory of former Saint Patrick swimmer and water polo player Dan Noble, who was killed in a tragic car accident in Lincolnwood this past December.
