Baseball Takes Two of Three Games
April 3, 2006

The Saint Patrick Shamrocks continued their hot start, winning two of three games last week to run their record to 4-1 on the season. The Shamrocks defeated Northside College Prep, and Maine East during the week, then fell to Elgin on Saturday. Saint Patrick is scheduled to play six non-conference games this week.

After rainstorms washed out their game at Fenwick on Tuesday, the Shamrocks took on Northside College Prep on Wednesday afternoon at Amundsen Park. Steve Yopchick took the hill for Saint Patrick and gave the Shamrocks a solid start. Yopchick pitched four innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, while striking out five. With the game tied 2-2 and darkness closing in, Mike Mockler led off the bottom of the fifth and final inning with a triple for the Shamrocks. Three batters later, Noah Reyes drove in Mockler with the winning run with a sacrifice fly. Mike Bolger picked up his first varsity win by pitching one inning of scoreless relief, striking out a pair. Reyes had two hits and two runs batted in to lead the Shamrock offense.

The next day Saint Patrick smashed Maine East 21-6. The Shamrocks blew the game open with an eight-run second inning, highlighted by home runs by Yopchick, Dan O’Donnell, and Kevin Cahill. Mike Giller paced the Shamrocks two doubles, a home run, and six runs batted in, while Noah Reyes added four hits, including a double and a triple, to go along with a pair of runs batted in. Mike Kotz went three innings, allowing one earned run and striking out four, to earn his second win of the season. Tim Mohs came out of the bullpen to pitch the final two innings. Mohs allowed two hits and recorded two strikeouts over his two scoreless innings of work. Head Coach Dan Eberle was glad to see the Shamrock offense break out, “It was nice to see our bat come alive in the warmer weather and our pitching has been solid, but we are still struggling with our defense.” The Shamrocks committed five errors, allowing five unearned runs to score in the Maine East half of the fourth inning.

On Saturday morning, the Shamrocks hit the road to take on Elgin. The Maroons handed Saint Patrick their first loss of the season. Elgin defeated the Shamrocks by a score of 10-5. The Shamrocks are scheduled to play six games this week. Saint Patrick will play Ridgewood, Driscoll Catholic, Niles North and Schurz before wrapping up the week with a doubleheader at Glenbrook South on Saturday.
