The Saint Patrick Shamrock wrestlers opened the 2006 portion of their schedule by hosting an East Suburban Catholic Conference triangular meet with Marian Catholic and Carmel on January 6. The Shamrocks won both matches to improve their dual meet record to 9-6 on the season.
In the opening match the Shamrocks fell behind early, losing the first four matches as Carmel jumped out to a 21-0 lead. Brian Rategan turned the tide for the Shamrocks, winning a 12-4 major decision at 171 lbs. Marty LaBelle won an 8-4 decision at 189 lbs, and Joe Fagiano scored a pin at 1:19 at 215 lbs to get the Shamrocks back in the match at 21-13.
Following a Carmel pin at 275, it was up to the smaller weight classes to rally the Shamrocks as they turned the lineup over trailing 27-13. Trent Koenig started the comeback with a pin at 103 lbs. Jimmy DiNino scored a 17-7 major decision at 112 lbs, and Tony Okal recorded an 11-2 major decision at 119 lbs to tie the match at 27 with three weight classes remaining. Due to injury the Shamrocks forfeited at 125 lbs, giving Carmel a 33-27 edge with two matches remaining. Brian Ridley tied the match at 33 by pinning his opponent at 1:32 at 130 lbs. The whole match came down to Steve DiNino at 135 lbs, and he didn’t let his team down. DiNino dominated his opponent, scoring a 10-0 major decision to give the Shamrocks a 37-33 comeback victory.
In the nightcap, the Shamrocks took on an undermanned Marian Catholic and after spotting them a 6-0 lead reeled off 21 straight points as Nick Luburich (160 lbs) and Fagiano (215 lbs) recorded pins, Rategan (171 lbs) scored a technical fall, and LaBelle (189 lbs) added a major decision to make it 21-6 Shamrocks. Marian won a major decision at 275 lbs, but the Shamrocks took the final 39 points for a 60-10 victory. Jimmy Coduti pinned his opponent at 140 lbs, and Ridley scored a 12-6 decision at 130 lbs and the Shamrocks got 30 points on forfeits.
