Shamrocks Crush Chicago Vocational, 44-8
October 29, 2004

The Saint Patrick Shamrocks destroyed Chicago Vocational Career Academy 44-8 in the first round of the IHSA Class 7A Football Playoffs. The Shamrocks dominated all aspects of the game, scoring six touchdowns in seven possessions while building a 41-0 halftime lead.

Chicago Vocational received the opening kickoff, and they had their most successful drive of the first half. The Cavaliers drove 25 yards on nine plays before being stopped on a fourth and one from their own 45. That was as good as it would get for the Cavaliers. Saint Patrick drove 45 yards on four plays for their first touchdown. Mike Lupa carried for gains of 8 and 20 yards, before Tom Barrett hit Steve Rivera for a 17-yard touchdown pass. George Hickey had a key block to help spring Rivera for the score.

Chicago Vocational would not get another first down on their next eight possessions, as the Shamrock defense tightened their grip on the game. The Cavaliers went three and out on their next possession, and their punter barely got the ball out on fourth down. The Shamrocks took over at their own 44, and they struck quickley. Barrett hit Hickey over the middle for a circus catch and a gain of 27 yards on the first play. Kevin Golden rushed for 19 on the second play, and Barrett found Hickey again for a 10-yard touchdown on the third play to make it 14-0 with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter.

The Cavaliers again went three and out. This time Renzo Mejia blocked the Cavalier punt, and it went out of bounds at the CVS 22. Barrett was intercepted on the first play from scrimmage, and CVS took over at their own 32. A botched snap and a penalty backed CVS up, and they faced a fourth and 22 from their own 20. Mejia again blocked the Cavalier punt. This time John Kusinski recovered it in the end zone, and the Shamrocks were ahead 21-0.

Another three and out, and a desperation run by the punter following a bad snap gave the Shamrocks another short field to work with, as they took over at the Cavalier 21. Barrett hit Mike Kotz for 20 yards, setting up a one yard plunge by Kevin Golden, making the score 28-0 with 8:28 remaining before halftime.

The Shamrock defense held again, and the Shamrocks got the ball back at the Cavalier 15, following a 28yard punt return by Joe Nee, with 6:39 left in the half. Two plays later the Shamrocks were in the end zone again on a 16-yard strike from Barrett to Matt O’Brien.

A 41-yard kick return by Bryan Pascascio gave the Cavaliers their best field position of the night at their own 49. The Shamrock defense held fast, and the Cavaliers had to punt from their own 38. Nee returned the Cavalier punt down the right sideline for 69 yards and a touchdown, and the score was 41-0 Shamrocks with 3:05 remaining in the half.

The Shamrocks rested their starters as the clock ran in the second half, but still held the Cavaliers to negative 20 yards of offense before a nine-play, 80-yard drive gave Chicago Vocational their only points with 2:05 remaining in the game.

Offensively the Shamrocks gained 211 yards on only 26 plays, rushing for 121 on 17 carries. Barrett completed 5 of 7 passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns. Ten different Shamrocks carried the ball, paced by Lupa and Golden, who each gained 33 yards on three carries.

Next week, the Shamrocks will face either Rolling Meadows or Saint Charles in the second round of the IHSA Class 7A Football Playoffs.
