Dietz, Mayerbock Lead 11 Shamrocks Named All-ESCC
October 25, 2004
Eleven Saint Patrick Shamrocks were named to the All-East Suburban Catholic Conference Football Team, with two Shamrocks earning player of the year honors. Linebacker Mark Dietz was named Defensive Player of the Year, and tackle Tim Mayerbock was recognized as the Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, along with A.J. Tomich of Joliet Catholic. Dietz’s size, speed, and relentless pursuit of the ball tormented opposing offenses all season, while Mayerbock dominated every defensive lineman that lined up across from him all year.
Dietz was a force on both sides of the ball. Defensively he led the team in tackles (53), tackles for loss (14), and sacks (11). Offensively, Dietz was just as impressive, pacing the Shamrocks in rushing yards (627), all purpose yards (690), and scoring (67 points).
At six-foot-four and 300 pounds, Mayerbock was an intimidating presence at left tackle. Mayerbock’s ability to control the line of scrimmage showed in the fact that Saint Patrick allowed only two sacks all season, while Shamrock ball carriers averaged nearly five yards per carry as a team.
The Shamrock defense, which held five of their opponents to one touchdown or less, while tallying 31 sacks and nine interceptions saw six players join Dietz on the all-conference team. Junior linebacker Brandon Kreczmer racked up 50 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, five sacks, and 12 quarterback hurries. Brian Risa made 40 tackles from his middle linebacker position. Mike Bertini anchored the defensive line from his nose guard position with 31 tackles and eight tackles for loss. The Shamrock secondary had three seniors honored for their performances this year. Joe Nee made 27 tackles, intercepted four passes and broke up 12 passes. Jason Genova recorded 23 tackles, two interceptions, and 10 passes broken up. Genova also caught 12 passes for 137 yards and two scores as a wide receiver. Pat Gallagly made 21 tackles and broke up eight passes, including a game saving play in the final minute at Marist.
Offensively, there were three players honored in addition to Dietz and Mayerbock. Junior quarterback, Tom Barrett provided the Shamrocks with leadership and consistency. Barrett completed 60% of his passes, connecting on 97 of 162 attempts for 1135 yards and nine touchdowns. Fullback Kevin Golden was the heart and soul of the Shamrock offense. In addition to being a devastating blocker, Golden rushed for 379 yards on 56 carries (6.8 avg.) with four touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 82 yards. Center Patrick Graney was a model of consistency. Whether protecting Barrett or opening holes for Shamrock runners, Graney performed admirably.
