Payton Award Winners Announced
October 18, 2004
The Saint Patrick High School football program honored three of their players last week with the annual Walter Payton Memorial Award.
Kevin Golden (St. Francis Borgia), Tim Meehan (Portage Park Elementary), and Aaron Boock (Newberry Academy) were all named recipients of this year's award.
The 2004 football season marks the fifth year for the award, and dictates that no football player on any level may wear the number "34" until the last game of the regular season.
Golden (varsity), Meehan (sophomore), and Boock (freshman) were each chosen by their coaches as the players who best exemplified the character of the late Chicago Bear great, Walter Payton, both on and off the field.
These players were rewarded by having the distinct honor of wearing Payton's number "34" in the last regular season game of the year.
Golden has been a big part of the Shamrocks' 7-1 start, rushing for 365 yards on 50 carries, catching 10 passes for 82 yards, and scoring four touchdowns. Golden's stellar blocking has been one reason that the Shamrocks are averaging better than five yards per carry on the ground and have allowed only two sacks all season.
The younger Payton Award winners are anchors on their respective lines Meehan plays center for the Shamrock sophomores, while Boock is a nose tackle on the freshman level. |
