Shamrock Defense Dominates Dons
September 3 , 2004
The Saint Patrick Shamrock moved to 2-0 on the season with a 16-7 victory over Notre Dame. The Saint Patrick defense allowed Notre Dame only four first downs and 61 yards of offense on 39 plays and sacked Notre Dame quarterback, Kevin Mitchell, five times. Saint Patrick also held the Dons to 0 for 13 on third and fourth down conversions. Offensively, the combination of Tom Barrett to George Hickey proved to be more than the Dons (1-1) could handle, connecting for a pair of touchdowns.
The Shamrock defenders dominated the first half, allowing the Dons only 16 yards and one first down on 21 offensive plays. The Shamrocks took a 3-0 lead into the locker room at the half as Mike Kotz capped a 13-play, 58-yard drive with a 27-yard field goal with 6:42 remaining in the second quarter.
Notre Dame took a 7-3 lead early in the third. On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Mark Dietz was stripped of the ball. Notre Dame's Ryan Finneke picked up the ball and returned it 16 yards for the Dons' only points. Saint Patrick responded with a 10 play, 80-yard drive, to re-take the lead for good. On second and 10 from the Dons' 43, Barrett found George Hickey behind the Notre Dame defense. Hickey hauled in the bomb, then fought his way across the goal line for the score to make it 9-7.
After Brian Felke blocked a Notre Dame punt, Saint Patrick took advantage of a short field to score again. On third and four from the Dons' 29, Barrett hit Hickey, who had enough yardage for the first down. Hickey spun away from two defenders, then raced up the right sideline for the games final score. Mike Kotz's extra point made it 16-7. Barrett finished the game 16 of 27 for 183 yards and two touchdowns, while Hickey caught three passes for 77 yards and two scores.
Defensively, the Shamrocks got strong games from several players. Mark Dietz, Brandon Kreczmer, Brian Risa and Renzo Mejia all recorded sacks, while the coverage of Jason Genova, Pat Gallagly, and Joe Nee helped hold Mitchell to nine of 21 for 29 yards passing. |
