Dietz Leads Shamrocks Past Saint Viator
August 27, 2004

The Saint Patrick Shamrocks opened the 2004 football season with a convincing 24-7 win over the Lions of Saint Viator Friday night in Arlington Heights. Mark Dietz led the way for the Shamrocks, racking up 124 combined yards and scoring all three of the Shamrock’s touchdowns on offense, while tallying five tackles and a sack on defense.

The Shamrock defense was superb, holding Saint Viator to 74 yards of offense on 39 plays, including negative five rushing yards on 20 attempts. In addition to Dietz, Mike Bertini, Jason Genova, Brandon Kreczmer and Brian Risa all played strong games.

After the Shamrock defense pinned Saint Viator in deep, Saint Patrick took advantage of a short field to take a 7-0 lead on Dietz’s seven-yard run with 2:44 remaining in the 1st quarter. Dietz extended the lead to 14-0, taking a screen pass from Tom Barrett and rumbling 36 yards for his second touchdown. The score remained that way until a Mike Kotz field goal from 21 yards gave the Shamrocks a 17-0 edge. The Lions scored on the ensuing possession, but the Shamrocks iced the game on Dietz’s third score of the night. This time, Dietz dove over the pile from one yard out to make it 24-7.

Dietz rushed 21 times for 84 yards and caught three passes for 40 yards. Junior quarterback, Tom Barrett, played a solid game, completing 11 of 20 passes for 97 yards and one touchdown. Matt Ledenbach, Kevin Golden and Luke Scanlon each caught two passes.

Saint Patrick faces the Dons of Notre Dame at Hanson Stadium on September 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
