Jazz Band kicks-off Chicago Jazz Festival

The Saint Patrick High School Honors Jazz Band played a rousing, hour-long, set to kick off the open the 26th annual Chicago Jazz Festival, held in Grant Park over Labor Day weekend.
The Shamrocks performed at the Jazz and Heritage Family stage, located near Buckingham Fountain.
The Saint Patrick Jazz Band was the only high school jazz band invited to perform at the Chicago Jazz festival.
They performed 10 songs, ranging from the 1970's funk of "Pickin' Up the Pieces" to classics like "My Funny Valentine". The band also recognized the 100th birthday of jazz legend Count Basie, performing Basie tunes "Lil' Darlin'" and "Splanky."
The Shamrocks finished their set with the stirring "A Nasty Bit o' Blues", which drew a standing ovation from the crowd.
The Chicago Jazz Festival is one of the top music festivals in the nation, attracting many of the top stars from the world of jazz.
The 2003 Chicago Jazz Festival was recognized by JazzTimes magazine as the "Best Jazz Festival" of the year.
Their performance at the Chicago Jazz Festival completed an exciting week for the Jazz Band at Saint Patrick.
On Tuesday, August 31, the Honors Jazz Band performed live on WGN Television. The Shamrocks were featured during the "Lunch Break" segment of the "WGN News at Noon."
The Saint Patrick High School Jazz Program consists of three bands (First-Year Band, Jazz Band, Honors Jazz Band) and combos. All bands rehearse daily and receive credit toward graduation. Private instruction with some of Chicago's finest performers and teachers are offered on every instrument. Every summer, Saint Patrick hosts a jazz camp for area grade school musicians.
Saint Patrick High School is Chicago's oldest Catholic high school for boys, and for over 140 years it has remained at the forefront of education, administering to the needs of young men in the Chicagoland area. |
