  Saint Patrick Holds 144th Commencement
May 27, 2005

Saint Patrick High School held its 144th Baccalaureate Liturgy and Commencement Exercises at Holy Name Cathedral on May 26. 199 Saint Patrick students received diplomas in the ceremony. Ryan Hayes was honored as the Valedictorian, while Patrick Rice was recognized as the Salutatorian.

In addition to these two fine students, Saint Patrick honored 11 other students that graduated with honors: Russell Avellana, Joseph Badsing, Joseph Drozd Jr., Brian Goedert, George Hickey, Alex DiSciullo-Jones, John Knuble-Ball, John Lonquist, Matthew Pales, Bran Schlink, and Robert Sershon.

Each department at Saint Patrick presents one senior with a merit award for excellence in their coursework for four years. This year’s winners are: Matthew Jankowski and Kevin McDonough for Art, Jason Genova for Athletics, David Bowman for Business, Russell Avellana for Drama and Science, Brian Goedert for English, Joseph Badsing for Foreign Language and Music, Przemyslaw Szumowski for Mathematics, Steven Pomeraning for Religious Studies, Adam Stasinopoulos for School Service, John Lonquist for Social Studies, and Joseph Drozd Jr. for Student Activities.

The Athletic Memorial Award, in honor of Mark Q. Cummings, was awarded to wrestler Juan Barajas. Cummings was a teacher and football coach at Saint Patrick that died on January 9, 1975 of a cerebral hemorrhage. For 17 years, Cummings shared a unique gift with the student-athletes to discover the positive in every situation and cheerfully accept life’s challenges. The recipient of this award best exemplifies the Shamrock spirit that Cummings exemplified.
