Two Tony Award-Winning Comedies on Tap for Theatre
August 24, 2009
Coming off an exciting 2008-2009 season, the Saint Patrick High School Theatre Department has released production dates for this year’s lineup which includes two Tony Award-winning Broadway comedies, Rumors (Neil Simon) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart; Music by Steven Sondheim). Rumors will run October 23 through October 25. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum will run March 19 through March 28.
Director Geoffrey Arndt hopes the comedies will build on last year’s successful season, but with a few more laughs along the way. The 2008 cast and crew of Amadeus (Peter Shaffer) was honored to be chosen to perform at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana for the 2009 Illinois High School Theatre Festival. This past spring several of the same cast and crew members then regrouped to put on one of the most successful productions in the history of St. Pat’s, West Side Story (Book by Arthur Laurents; Music by Leonard Bernstein; Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim). The production staff received high marks after each of the show’s six sell-out performances.
“I think a lot of our success can be attributed to the exemplary fine arts curriculum St. Pat’s has constructed over the years,” said Arndt who helps students develop their theatrical talents in various theatre arts and acting courses. “It’s a thrill to watch students take what they’ve learned in the classroom and have fun with it on stage.”
