Saint Patrick Faculty Member Presents Eastern Religions Seminar
September 24, 2007

William Frere, a member of the Saint Patrick High School faculty, presented a seminar on Eastern Religions at Loyola University on Wednesday, September 26.  The seminar was held in the Bremner Lounge, located within the Centennial Forum Student Union.

The seminar, sponsored by Loyola’s Intercultural Club, focused on the basics of the religions of Jainism and Shinto.  Jainism is an ancient religion from India that teaches that the way to liberation and bliss is to live a life of harmlessness and renunciation.  The aim of a Jain life is to achieve liberation of the soul.  Shinto is a Japanese religion that is wholly devoted to life in this world and emphasizes man's essential goodness.

Frere, who holds both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree from Loyola University of Chicago, spent 29 years at all-girls schools, 11 years at Alvernia High School and 18 at Trinity High School, before coming to Saint Patrick this year.  Frere teaches in the Religion department at Saint Patrick.
