Shamrocks Shine at Model United Nation Conference
February 25, 2008

The Saint Patrick High School Model United Nations stood out at a Model UN Conference at Bradley University in Peoria. Competing against a total of 60 delegates from East Leyden and Hubbard high schools, the Shamrocks dominated, winning nine of 11 possible awards.

The Shamrocks served on three committees: Security Council, Disarmament and International Security Committee, and Social, Humanitarian and Cultural. These committees discussed a wide range of topics, including: child soldiers, Iran's nuclear arms program, Darfur, oppression in Burma, India / Pakistan rivalry, nuclear disarmament, British, nuclear arms increase, Iran: security threat to Israel. The committees were asked to deal with the following unexpected twists: a missile strike on Israel from Iran, and a break out of Ebola. In those scenarios, the Saint Patrick delegates were able to successfully avoid a global economic collapse and the outbreak of World War III.

Matt Forrest was honored for the best position paper, and Brendan Crowley, Joe Gebhart, Ed Gaskew were named outstanding delegation for their representation of the United Kingdom. Vince Floress and Alex Zalewski were named distinguished delegates while David Clemente and Cody Aguda were given honorable mention recognition.
