Saint Patrick to Offer Chinese Class
July 5, 2007

Saint Patrick High School has always been one of the most innovative schools in the Chicagoland area.  The school continues to seek new ways to give the young men that attend Saint Patrick an edge later in life.  This year they will provide something that few schools offer, when they begin a class in Introductory Chinese.

Chow-Wie Lee, a native of China, who is currently living in Chicago, will teach the class.  Meeting before school, every other day, for the entire school year, the class will focus on the language and culture of the Chinese people.  In the inaugural year, the class will be offered as an “Enrichment Class,” with students able to earn a half-credit.  The administration at Saint Patrick will gauge the interest level to see if it might generate a two-year language sequence in Chinese.  The school currently offers four-year language sequences in French, Spanish, and German.

Lowell I. Stahl, a 1952 graduate of Saint Patrick Academy and Chairman Emeritus of the Saint Patrick Board of Trustees, strongly backs the program.  As a businessman, Stahl knows how important it is for high school students to be familiar with the language and culture of the country that features the world’s fastest growing economy.  Stahl, one of the school’s most generous benefactors, demonstrated his support for this endeavor by covering the cost of textbooks for the entire class.
