Shamrock Chess Team Finishes 12th in State

The Saint Patrick chess team, behind strong performances by Mike Granata and Matt Szulc, finished 12th in the Illinois High School Association Chess Championships on February 10, 2007. Granata posted a record of 5-1-1 on Board #1, and Szulc finished a perfect 7-0 on Board #4.
The Shamrocks opened the tournament with wins over Hinsdale Central, Glenbard South, and Richwoods before losing to Evanston Township. Evanston boasts one of the best teams in the state, coming into the tournament ranked fifth overall, and finished the day fourth in the state. The Shamrocks bounced back with wins over Fremd and Lincoln Park. In their final match of the tournament, Saint Patrick squared off against the team that came into the tournament ranked in the state, the Vikings of Niles North. The Shamrocks fell to the Vikings, but finished 12th in the state.
With a record of 5-2, with the two losses coming to two of the top teams in the state, the Shamrocks could hold their heads high. In addition to Granata and Szulc, several Shamrocks enjoyed strong tournaments. John Egan (4-2-1) and Steve Gonzales (4-3-0) each won four matches, while Marcin Michniowski (3-3-1) and Tony Acosta (3-2-2) captured two matches apiece.
The Shamrocks enjoyed a successful season under first-year head coach, Ron Wojnar, posting a record of 24-7-1 overall, including a perfect 13-0 mark in the Chicago Chess Conference.
